Aringay La Union
The town’s pride are beaches and mountain sceneries. You can go mountain
trekking or hiking following the Aringay River passing through a scenery
of big rocks and a plantation of giant ipil-ipil and mahogany trees.
The Municipality of Aringay is located in the southern portion of the
province of La Union. It is bounded on the North by the Municipality of
Caba; on the East by the mountainous area of Tuba, Benguet; and on the West by
the Lingayen Gulf. A small portion of Aringay is bounded on the northeast by the
Municipalities of Naguilian and Burgos and on the Southeast by Tubao and Pugo,
La Union.
Legend tells us that Aringay was named after “Aring”, the beautiful daughter of
the datu who was the ruler of the northern settlement. This beautiful girl was
the subject of a near tragic courtship with the only son of the chieftain of the
southern settlement.
One dark night, the young lovers secretly met at the middle of the river for the
purpose of making final plans for their elopement. Aring, sensing that something
was going wrong with their plans, jumped into the roaring river in an attempt to
kill herself, but the young man was quick to rescue. He shouted, “ARING, AY
ARING”, and quickly dove into the river to save Aring. Several people heard the
shouts and helped to bring the young man and Aring to the shore.
This incident resulted in the marriage of Aring with the young man and the union
of the two (2) settlements, thus forming the village called “ARINGAY”
in memory of Aring. The courageous young man later became the ruler of the
village.

Diego Silang's Birthplace
it is recorded that Aringay was a town of Pangasinan before La Union was formed in 1850, when the colonial government merged the southern town of Ilocos Sur, the northern towns of Pangasinan, and the western towns of Benguet to the east.
The great Diego Silang was born here.
