History of Mayantoc

The first settlers of Mayantoc before the coming of the Christian migrants were the negritos of the abiling tribes. As the former arrived in great numbers, the natives were soon forced to moved deeper into the forest areas of Zambales Mountain Range.

The Christian settlers, mostly from the Ilocos region notably the towns of Cabugao,Tagudin,Sarrat, Paoay, Sinait and Bacarra settled in villages in the southern portion of a then Christian Town Camiling, now acknowledge as the mother Town of Mayantoc. These villages later formed the barrio (baraggay) Mayantoc under the township of Camiling. The place was still then a forested area where there was abundance of rattan Palm, Known by visitors and ambulant traders as YANTOC" so that in time, the barrio became as a place "NA MARAMING YANTOC"which still later become as MA-YANTOC" as it's official name. Even though the majority of the inhabitants were Ilocanos. It was surprising why MAYANTOC', which is a Tagalog word was selected.

On Decemeber 23, 1916, acording to previous petitions of the barrio people of Mayantoc led by the Santos, Asuncion, Tomas de Vera, Salamanca, Samaiego, Sana and Pobre families, among others, the American Governor-General Francisco Burton-Harrison promulgated Executive Order No. 96 declaring Mayantoc a separate municipality from Camiling. The new town was inaugurated on January 1, 1917 with the Spanish mestizo Don Antonio Sanz the first appointed Municipal President, Don Francisco Santos y Pascual, the acknowledge founder and patron of the town on September 1, 1917.
